Zakir Husain College was established in 1792.
Zakir Husain College was founded by Ghaziuddin Khan, one of the Emperor Aurangzeb's leading Deccan commanders and the father of the first Nizam of Hyderabad. In 1824, this institution was engrafted onto Delhi College by the British East India Company's government. However, Urdu or Hindustani shortly gained importance in this unique institution and became the principal medium of instruction. These languages were not only for oriental sciences and literature, but also for the study of astronomy and mathematics on European principles. These had been introduced and enthusiastically received by teachers and students as early as 1827.
Zakir Husain College is centrally situated near Ajmeri Gate which is 0.9Kms from New Delhi Metro Station. It can be easily found on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, New Delhi. The College is one of the first colleges to create an initiative where individual students can directly access their assessment and attendance records. This scheme does not need to rely on necessarily expensive smart cards. This information is provided by the college free of charge. The college has advanced technologies such as intranet online access to internal assessment and attendance records for students and faculty, computer labs and a well equipped multi-media library. The college auditorium has a capacity of 450 seats, Audio-visual Room especially for workshops and seminars. The College has a spacious and the library possesses about 1,11,500 books. The Library not only caters well to the academic requirements but it also houses leisure books and books for general awareness. It also subscribes to 35 national and international journals. The library is well equipped with multi-media computers and a vast collection of electronic materials for e-learning.
Zakir Husain College has the biggest Book Bank in Delhi University which provides services to students by giving them textbooks for the whole academic session. The College will have a souvenir and stationary shop soon. The College has a very devoted Garden Committee, which makes sure a round-the-year green campus. Every year the college bags many prizes in the ‘Delhi University Flower Show'.
Zakir Husain College believes in overall development of its students and hence offers facilities for sports and games, quiz competitions, hobby competitions etc and organizes debates and seminars time to time. At present Hostel accommodations are offered to out station male students only. The college’s placement cell makes all the necessary arrangements for job interviews during final year of studies. It’s one of the preferred colleges among recruiters of national and international reputation. The College offers various under Graduate Post Graduate Courses for the students. It also offers Certificate course in various foreign languages.

Zakir Husain College plays a crucial role during the academic session. Faculty members as well as professionals from various fields have been involved in this venture. The Cell works in association with Career Launcher, Times Education and Indian Express and organizes the interaction of final year students with experts from diverse areas. It also arranged for grooming sessions for the students to prepare them for group discussions and personal interviews. Companies like Barclays, ICICI, Wipro, Genpact, Livewel Aviation Industry, Max New York Life Insurance, Co., Google and Wipro Technologies have selected candidates and also have recruited some second year students for internship programmes. 75% of all students enrolled with the cell are usually absorbed in various positions. Some students have also joined in free coaching classes for various competitive exams through the Ministry of Minorities Affairs.
