Punjab Technical University - PTU Jalandhar was founded by an act of State Legislature on 16th Jan 1997 to promote Technical, Management & Pharmaceutical education in the state at the Degree level and above. Punjab Technical University has the authorization to set up centers of Excellence in Emerging Technologies and for promoting Training, Research & Development in these areas.
Punjab Technical University - PTU Jalandhar is situated at Jalandhar-Kapurthala road, 14 kms from Jalandhar and 5 kms from Kapurthala. Nearest railway station is in the city itself (15kms) and the nearest airport is in Amritsar (70 kms). One of the main focuses of the University currently is in the area of professional & skill oriented technologies to the masses.

Interim Council of distance education gives guidelines for the improvement of distance program and necessary actions are being taken for the same.

Punjab Technical University - PTU Jalandhar has set up more than 300 Learning Centers in all the regions of Punjab and across India which are conducting diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses in IT, Fashion & Beauty Technologies, Paramedical & Applied Technologies, Hotel Management & Tourism and Media Technologies.
Punjab Technical University - PTU Jalandhar also undertakes the task of training students to help in the development of skilled manpower in this sector, in the country, in general and in the state particular. The University promotes a number of courses in different streams in regular as well as distance education programmes. Currently, the University under its administration has 288 Colleges offering Courses in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, B.Sc MLT, Hotel Management & Catering Technology and IT Disciplines and 1005 Learning centers under distance education programme.
Punjab Technical University - PTU Jalandhar has taken initiatives in technical education to provide most recent trends in technology and give opportunity to student and faculty. It wants them to interact with the technology leaders in the country including e-Governance to PTU. In order to provide opportunity to the faculty to improve their qualification and to introduce research activities, the University has set up nine regional centers at various locations in Punjab and has started M.Tech courses. It has also agreed to provide academic research input to these centers.
