Government College of Education-GCE was known as Government Post-Graduate Basic Training College. It was established in August 1954. The college has a great tradition of high achievements in the field of teacher education and ranks among the leading colleges of education in the country. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited Grade ‘A’ to Government College of Education. The National Council for Teacher Education has authorized 25 seats for Master of Education, 300 seats for Bachelor of Education and 20 seats for Bachelor of Education in Yoga. A University Grants Commission Sponsored Post Graduate Diploma course in Yoga Therapy has also started with 25 seats.
Government College of Education-GCE has spacious campus with well maintained lawns, playgrounds and separate hostels for boys and girls. It also has an excellent library. Numerous dimensions have been added to the teacher training programme so as to make it as comprehensive as possible. The curriculum prescribed by the Panjab University, Chandigarh is enriched by seminars, workshops symposia, community activities, educational camps and numerous modes of other practical work.
Government College of Education-GCE has a computer lab which is well equipped and maintained with around 40 computers, two printers, scanner, DVD/CD-writers etc. The library supports academic programme offered by the college as per the curriculum requirement of its users. It is centrally located and is easily accessible to all the students and staff of the college.
