Synod College, Shillong is a Co-educational Institution run by the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Synod Sepngi. It was founded in the year 1965 (Registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860: No. SR /SC-6/75 of 1975 with the aim of imparting higher education to the youths of the State in particular, and the region and the country in general. Over the years, it has grown and attained high academic standards, making it one of the well-known Institutions in the region.

The vision of the Synod College is to provide the highest standard of academic excellence in a Christian environment, primarily for the economically disadvantaged students, in preparation for a life of purpose, service and leadership and the mission of the Synod College is to shaping the lives of students particularly the economically disadvantaged, by providing education par-excellence, so as to produce well informed, equipped and responsible citizens.

The Synod College has a dynamic NSS unit which conducts regular programmes for the benefit of the community. The unit is look after by the Programme Officers appointed by the Principal of the College. The programmes usually conducted are cleaning drive, blood donation, adoption of a village for community development, environmental awareness programmes, aids awareness programme, adult education programme and etc.

Both males and females students can join the NCC in the Synod College. The NCC of the College functions under the supervision of the NCC Officers appointed by the Principal. The cadets from the college participated in many programmes such a National Integration Camp, Republic Day Parade, extension programme through the College, and other programmes and trainings organized by the NCC.

A programme of “Basic Science Laboratories Exposure” in the Synod College to secondary students of the State will be held on the 29th June 2010 in collaboration with the State Council of Science technology of Environment. Workshop on “Creative tasks for the communicative classroom” will be held on the 7th July 2010. A two day “Faculty Development programme” will be held on the 8-9 July 2010. A one day Seminar of the Department of Khasi will be held on the 30th July 2010. National conference on “Climate change potential environmental apocalypse: Human Ethics in Question” will be held on the 7-8, October 2010.

The only organization recognized by the Synod College inside the campus is the "Synod College Students' Association", the official Students' Association. It is in fact a part and parcel of the Institution. It is an elected body of Class Representatives. No other organization is allowed to function in the College.

The Synod College students have a common room where they can play indoor games as Table Tennis, Carom and Chess. They can also play Basket Ball, Football, Cricket or any other outdoor games in the college campus. During the annual College Week the students can participate in various games and competitions organized by the ‘Synod College Students’ Association’. These are Football, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Cricket, Table Tennis, Chess, Carom, and Arm Wrestling in sports and games. Other competitions are Essay Writing, Quiz, Skit and Drama, Fancy Dress, Music and Singing, Dancing, Painting and Mr. & Miss. Synod College.

Synod Collegeoffers different kind of courses in Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce. After accreditation in 2005 by NAAC, the College constituted the IQAC on the 17th October, 2005 for the post accreditation quality sustenance activity. The IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic action to improve the academic and administrative performance of the College.
