Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai was started in 1965 to provide agricultural education to aspirants in Tamil Nadu that could effectively prepare men and women for a career in agricultural sector and offer the results of need –based research projects to the benefit of farmers. The Architect of the college was the founder Dean Dr. A. Mariakulandai. His incisiveness and long – sightedness played a great role in establishing the College. The salient feature of the college is that almost all the teachers are doctoral degree holders. As per the agricultural education policy of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, the college insists on 'do-how' besides 'know-how' for the development of skill and professional confidence among the graduates. Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai is a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore and is situated at twelve kilometers away from the Madurai City on Madurai-Trichy National Highway and just 5km away from Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Station.

The campus of Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai is the second biggest campus of TNAU accommodating 650 under-graduates, post-graduate students and Ph.D. scholars, and is placed at the foothill of historical monument Yanamalai, a small rocky mountain on the western side. The green and idyllic atmosphere has made the campus a favorite picnic spot for the pupils of schools and colleges in and around Madurai and they say the spirit of beauty and the quest for knowledge reign supreme in the campus. The campus also has a watertank which attracts birds and has been referred as undeclared sanctuary for peacock. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was selected as the best university in India for the year 2000 and Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai was adjudged as the best College in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University twice during 2002 and 2008.

Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai was initially accommodated in small buildings at the western side of the campus. The institute grew in leaps and bounds and today it has a sprawling main building, laboratories, seminar-halls, machine rooms, auditorium, other confidence building infrastructures, hostels for under graduate and post-graduate students, separate hostels for girls, sophisticated instruments, modern E-learning lecture halls, well-equipped library, a strong computer center with up to-date hardwares and softwares, sports-stadium, play ground, swimming pool, canteen, post-office, halls for indoor games and dispensary. Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai is also serviced with a branch of ‘State Bank of India’, post office, cooperative store to benefit the students and staff. The college was later affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore when it was born in the year 1971. The college was upgraded as Agriculture College and Research Institute later.

The library of Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai was started during the year 1965 in the Main Building of Agricultural College and Research Institute and then it was shifted to the present premises on 28th September 1994.The Modern Library Centre funded by AHRDP as annex to the main library was declared open on 23rd July 2001 for Students Internet Browsing Centre, e-Learning Lab, Network Operation Centre and Placement Cell. State of the art class rooms of good ambiance equipped with all teaching aids including multimedia projector, participatory seating arrangement to create an appropriate teaching learning milieu through careful blend of modern and traditional pedagogy.Use of Modern Electronic Gadgets (MEG) and information Technology Dissemination Modules.Computer and Web based tutorial and Multimedia Courseware. Multi connecting point for conference sharing, access for guest lectures, placement opportunities and distance learning across the Globe.Collection of 15,000 reference books, 30,000 text books, 15,000 back volumes, 1300 theses, 137 National, 45 International Journals, e-journals and Compact Discs digitally documented for easy access.Wi-Fi network and 24 x 7 Net Browsing facilities with 2 mbps. Online course materials. It also provides NSS and NCC services, Social Service League.

Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai offers four year Under Graduate, two year Post Graduate and three year Doctoral Degree Programmes. The Institute is offering Masters and Doctoral programme in specialized disciplines. About 100 students are admitted to the B.Sc. Agriculture degree programme every year through counseling. At present there are 377 Under Graduate, 84 Post Graduate and 14 Ph.D. students on roll at this college. Semester pattern is followed in educational programmes.

The Agricultural College and Research Institute Madurai-AC and RI Madurai placement cell is functioning actively under the Dean to guide the students for their employment opportunities. The regular coaching classes are arranged to the students for ICAR and civil service examinations.
