Tongji University - Shanghai formerly Tongji German Medical School, was established in 1907. It was given its present name and became a state university in 1927. It was one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. The history of Tongji University - Shanghai can be traced back to 1907 when Tongji German Medical School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Shanghai. The name Tongji suggests cooperating by riding the same boat. The school was expanded to include engineering in its programs and got its new name as Tongji Medical and Engineering School in 1912. It was formally established as a university in 1923 and was renamed as National Tongji University in 1927. During the Anti-Japanese War (1937 -1945),Tongji University - Shanghai campus was moved from Shanghai first to Zhejiang Province, then to Jiangxi Province and Yunnan Province and later to Sichuan Province. It was eventually moved back to Shanghai in 1946. It then grew to be a comprehensive university which offered programs in science, engineering, medicine, arts and law.

Tongji University - Shanghai is located in the municipal city of Shanghai and is made up of five campuses namely, covering an area of 2,460,000 m2 , consists of five campuses. The Siping Road Campus is situated on Siping Road; the West Campus on Zhennan Road; the North Campus on the Gonghexing Road; the East Campus on Wudong Road and the Jiading Campus now under construction is located in Shanghai International Automobile City in Anting.

At present, there are schools and departments covering the subjects of science, engineering, liberal arts, law, medicine, business and management. Tongji University - Shanghai gives priority to the disciples-designing in the area of faculty-building. The alumni association of Tongji University - Shanghai was founded on 20th May 1985. It is based in the Administration Building of Tongji University. The director of the alumni association is Professor LI Guohao. Mr. Qiao Shi, the former chairman of China People's Congress, is an honorary director of the association. There are alumni branches thoughout China in Anqing, Beijing, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Fuxin, Gansu, Guangzhou, Guilin, Henan, Hong Kong, Lishui, Linyi, Ningxia, Bao Steel Works of Shanghai, Shanghai Railway System, Shenzhen, Shengyang, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Wuhan, Wuxi, Zaozhuang and Zhanghzhou. There are also two international branches in Germany and the United States.

There are four departments in the Student Accommodation Centre in Tongji University - Shanghai. They are Facilities Department, Postgraduate Students Department, Undergraduate Students Department and Administration Department. There are 211 staff in the Centre responsible for accommodation arrangement, security, maintenance, repairs, cleaning and laundry of the student accommodation located in different campuses of the Tongji University - Shanghai which accommodate over 15,000 students. Each building has a student warden who helps students with problems that have occurred in their daily life.

The Food Centre was established in January 1999. There are 6 departments in the Centre. They are Student Canteen Department, Maintenance Department, Procurement Department, Canteen Department, Finance Department and Administration Department. The Centre caters students and staff in Tongji University - Shanghai. There are 8 students canteens, 6 restaurants and 1 bakery, 1 minority style canteen and 1 senior teachers' canteen the Food Centre. The Centre can cater more than 30,000 students and staff at the same time. There are over 100 cooks in the Centre, among whom there are 32 second class cooks, 7 first class cooks and 2 top class cooks. The canteens are categorized into five types, i.e. Service Type, Day Type, Restaurant Type, Social Type and Feature Type.
