Fatima Mata National College - FMNC Kollam was founded in 1951 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Jerome M. Fernandez, the first native Bishop of Quilon, with a view to providing facilities for higher education in the diocese. The Fatima Mata National College - FMNC Kollam was formally inaugurated on the 29th of December, 1952 by His Eminence Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilory, Papal Legate to India.Fatima was elevated to the status of a first grade college with the introduction of degree courses in Commerce, Economics and Zoology. This was followed by introduction of courses in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Physical resources were added in the form of Hostels, a sports pavilion, Chemistry block, an auditorium, playgrounds, an NCC office, hockey stadium, language lab, basket ball courts, a botany garden, computer labs and research centres.
Fatima Mata National College - FMNC Kollam honours the name of Our Lady Of Fatima, the Blessed Virgin Mary seen in apparition at Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The founder, Bishop Jerome Fernandez, an ardent devotee of the Heavenly Mother, wished that every member of the Fatima community enjoy her maternal protection and care. His patriotic spirit also envisioned every Fatimite imbued with a genuine sense of service and sacrifice for the nation. Hence the name Fatima Mata National College.
The Fatima Mata National College - FMNC Kollam Library is located at the center of the main building, and covers two floors. The library is divided into a graduate section and post-graduate section in order to provide better facilities to students of higher classes. A reading room, accessible to all, makes newspapers, journals and magazines easily available. An Internet room provides free access to the net for teachers and post-graduate students. The stock of the library has been computerized for easier location and systematic issuance.
The language laboratory of Dept. of English is situated close to the department; it also functions as an audio-visual room with facilities like DVD players, television and slide projector. The language laboratory is indented to tap the potential of the electronic resources in language study. The lab is used for the teaching of Phonetics, Communicative English and to train students for potential jobs in the electronic media.Well equipped Computer Labs arranged for the students. The Department of Commerce and Mathematics have their own independent computer labs. Students of the respective departments are allowed the use of labs as part of their course study .
The Fatima Mata National College - FMNC Kollam has a hockey ground and a basketball court in the front yard, a football field behind the chemistry block and a Multi-Gym & Fitness Center adjacent to the college canteen. The Dept. of physical education works in close association with the SAI (Sports Authority of India) and the sports council; as such the facilities of SAI are made available to the students of the Fatima Mata National College - FMNC KollamCoaching is offered in all disciplines and like Baseball, Basketball, Football, Handball, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Powerlifting, Body Building, Wrestling, Boxing, Lawn tennis, kabbadi etc.
The Fatima Mata National College - FMNC Kollam is proud to own a spacious and well-equipped auditorium named after His Lordship, Bishop Jerome, the founder of the college. Located ideally in the center of the main building, the auditorium is the plus of the college as it hosts programmes of academic importance as well as cultural significance in addition to competitions, variety entertainment and festival celebrations like Onam and Christmas. The auditorium can house an audience of up to 1500.
