Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI is a unique postgraduate medical institution devoted to the study of chest diseases. It is a University of Delhi maintained institution and is funded entirely by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI is ideally located in the heart of the main campus of the University of Delhi, providing the requisite academic environment. The Institute fulfills the national need for providing relief to large number of patients in the community suffering from chest diseases. It has eminently discharged its role and has earned a unique place in the field of Chest Medicine.
The main objectives of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI have been to conduct research on basic and clinical aspects of chest medicine, to train post graduates in Pulmonary Medicine and allied subjects, to develop new diagnostic technology and disseminate scientific knowledge related to Chest Medicine to other institutions in the country and to provide specialized clinical and investigative services to patients.
The need for a teaching and research Institute in chest diseases was spelt out in the Bhore Committee Report (Ministry of Health) by highlighting an acute paucity of trained personnel in the specialty of chest diseases in the country. The Directorate of Ministry of Health, Government of India, therefore, approached Sir Maurice Gwyer, the then Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi, to start a course in chest diseases at the earliest. In 1946, the Committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor for this purpose recommended the establishment of a Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI.
The Academic, Scientific and Clinical services are organized under the Departments of Anaesthesiology, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Cardiorespiratory Physiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Research Centre (housing Outdoor/Indoor patient care services), Medical Mycology, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Radiodiagnosis and Imaging, Respiratory Allergy and Applied Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, Respiratory Virology and Thoracic Surgery. These department are headed by the Faculty members in the concerned area.
Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI is engaged in postgraduate medical education by conducting MD courses on Pulmonary Medicine, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology and Pharmacology, PhD programme in subjects related to chest medicine and allied sciences and a diploma course in chest diseases. A large number of students from other institutions/colleges were also trained in the departments of the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI. The faculty members were engaged in many research projects sponsored by different agencies of Government of India, World Health Organization, etc. Research findings from these studies are presented by students and faculty members of the Institute in national and international conferences and are published in national and international journals of repute.
Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI Library is providing patient care information support and catering to the academic needs of the faculty members, resident doctors, researchers and students alike for research purposes. It forms a part of Institute support services and acquires thought process, collate and disseminates global information in the field of Biomedical Sciences with specialization in pulmonary diseases and allied sciences. The library started in 1955, but it has back volumes of several journals more than 100 years old. Most of the journals have complete sets of volumes originating right from their treatises of medicine which are readily available for basic and historical insights. It also has a very good comprehensive collection of serial publications like Annual Reviews, Years books, Recent advances.
The steady growth of the library can be gauged from the fact that initially, it was based in a single-room establishment, but subsequently, it expanded and presently is housed in accomadation covering entire floor of the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI’s building. The present holdings of the library mainly consist of about 9869 Books and 18820 Volumes of bound journals besides containing 442 M.D. & Ph.D thesis, 110 CDs and 75 National and International Reports. A total of 96 Journals (91 International and 05 National) are being subscribed, 20 Journals are being received on exchange programme with the Institute's own Journal and 33 Journals (09 International and 24 National) are received on a complimentary basis. To cover the need for daily coverage of news related to the medical field, Library is also subscribing four English and two Hindi newspapers. This has encouraged the inculcation of reading habits of all alike.
The Department imparted training to scientists of other research institutions in various techniques, viz., analysis of mycotoxins in food materials, analysis of lipids from biological sources and other research techniques. The Department of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI also had a unit through Ministry of health and Family Welfare for the analysis of mycotoxins in food materials, analysis of lipids from biological sources and the research techniques. The Department had collaborative research projects with Departments of Botany, Chemistry and Zoology of Delhi University and Department of Biochemistry of South Campus.
The main function of the Animal House centres of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI around the objectives to supply adequate number of good quality (genetically and pathogen free) animals, which is essential for obtaining reliable and reproducible experimental result in research. Different species and pathogen free animals are bred in the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute-VPCI Institute Animal House. The Animal House is completely renovated and upgraded to provide optimum environment for experimental animals and to meet international standards of animal experimental laboratories. Further, animal management will address ethical concern of the scientific community giving high priority to the welfare of laboratory animals and their judicious utilization.
