Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur is the second oldest institution of higher learning in Bihar, second to Patna College of Patna only. Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur is now 124(one hundred and twenty four) years old having already celebrated its centenary in which the chief guest was the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Hon’ble Shri Bhagwat Jha ‘Azad’. Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur was established on 12 Feb. 1883 with Intermediate level classes then called as F. A. under Calcutta University, as there was no university in Bihar. Rai Bahadur Tej Narayan Singh contributed a good deal of his mind, labour, money and land also for its building and the college was named as Tej Narayan Jubillee College (TNJ). Just after 2 years in 1885, degree and Post-graduate classes in some of the subject of Arts and degree class in Law were started in thisTej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur. Again the successors of Banaili families came to its help and contributed 60 acres of land and 6 lakhs of rupees in Cash for the construction of building and other developmental work. The Govt. of Bihar also gave some grant for the building and as a consequence the magnificent building of the college came up in 1922. The college was renamed on the 23rd June 1959 as Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur considering the great contribution made by the Banaili estate towards its rise and glorious achievements.
Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur is situated on the southern bank of holy Ganges and on N.H. 80 just 2 K.M. away (west) from Bhagalpur Railway Junction which is directly linked with Patna, Ranchi, New Delhi, Kolkata and other important cities of India.
In the year 1959 it was made a constituent unit of Bihar University and 12th July’1960, Bhagalpur University was established after bifurcation from the Bihar University and Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur became the first premier constituent College of the University. In fact most of the present P. G. departments of Bhagalpur University originated first in the Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur and then after a few years, got transferred to their present buildings. In Feb.’2004, the college was accredited by NAAC and awarded B+ grade.
A big library was established in the Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur premises with the establishment of the college. It runs in a two storied building having separate well furnished reading rooms for teachers, boys and girls. About one lakh forty thousand reading materials are available here in which more than two thousand references, two thousand text books and hundreds of magzines and papers of National and International level are the key features of the library. Dozens of reputed Hindi and English Newspapers and Magzines are available. Working hours is from 8.00 AM to 6.00 PM. Though it opens on Sunday but books are not issued on that day.
To accommodate large number of students there are five Hostels for boys in the Tej Narayan Banaili College-TNB College Bhagalpur campus namely: Ashwini East Block Hotel, West Block Hostel, Krishna Hostel, Welfare Hostel and U.G.C. Hostel.
