Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal was started 30 years ago by local farm community as they saw the need for a college in this underdeveloped area. In the beginning when this college was started, they did not have facility of their own so they were conducting morning classes in a local high school.

Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal is run by Yavatmal Zilha Akhil Kunbi Samaj, Umarkhed.Formerly known as ARTS and COMMERCE COLLEGE, was established in 1966 by Janata Shikshan Prasark Mandal, Pusad, and Dist Yavatmal and handed over to present Society in 1976. The founder president Late Shree Narayanraojee Wankhede has established Yavatmal Zilha Akhil Kunbi Samaj Society to impart education to rural and educationally deprived people of Society.

Dr. Atmaram Gawande, who is born in this area and had gone to high school in Umarkhed, saw the opportunity to help the community in their educational endeavor. In the year 1985, Dr. Sushila and Dr. Atmaram Gawande provided the seed money to build Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal. To honor Dr. Gawandes mother, this college is now named Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande. The Government of Maharashtra gave the land to build the college, the local community and farmers collected the funds and a small college building is now built over several years.

Still the work is incomplete till Dr. Atmaramji Gawande & Shushila gawande (NRI) ATHENS, OHIO, USA visited Umarkhed with their son and daughter who were honored by college management in high school. He has committed to help this college at and Dr. Gawande donated seed money for the construction of college building. Major amount was collected from local community. Main Building of College was inaugurated in December 1987, renaming the college after the name of Dr. Atmaramji Gawandes mother Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal in Dec. 1988. To meet the challenges college has started science faculty in 1990.

Mission of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal is to emphasis on vocational & technical education. Promote college as lifelong learning centre. Prepare student for 21st century. Plan international exposure & work on international student exchange. Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal is located in Umarkhed District Yavatmal, Maharashtra. Umarkhed is one of the most rural and tribal area of Yavatmal district and far away from most common developments. Due to poor financial conditions the college was not having its own building; the classes were taken at high school on rent basis. Late Narayan Patil Wankhede, Adv. Shree Anantraojee Deosarkar and their coworkers were kin about to provide adequate facilities to the students. The first step towards this is to acquire land. State Govt. has handed over 33 acres of Land about 2.5 Km from Umarkhed to construct College Building. The basement work of main building of college was completed in 1980. For this fund were raised from local community, farmers and donors.

Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal offers different kind of bachelor and master courses leading to different streams. The infrastructure of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal is the main part of institution and need special attention. However at the same time we were looking for how better academic facilities can be made available to students. Thanks are due to UGC for sanctioning grants to Remedial Coaching and College Science Improvement Program. Apart from this we have arranged guest lecture series, conducted competitive exam coaching, sports facility, financial aid, library facility and all such which will help student for all-round development. After passing their first degree students are joining higher Education in respective fields.

Computer Lab of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal the Carl and Helen Roberts computer lab was established in 1998 and provides 12 computers. The Engle Garnet computer lab was established in 2003 and provides 12 computers. The online teaching facility was established in 2005 and provides 2 LCD projectors for teaching. Dialup internet access is available in all labs. Need-based, individualized courses are available in C/C++/Java/VB/HTML.

Hostel facility of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal due to the fund given by Dr. Gawande, Boys hostel was build up in the college campus. He provided Rs. 25 lakhs as donation for Boys Hostel. The hostel is having many of huge rooms, office for Hostel Garden, and a big Dining Hall. The capacity of each room is 4 students. There is a big ground in front of hostel for sports and exercise for the students. The students of different religions are admitted to the hostel. The strength of hostel is up to 50. The girl's hostel cans accommodate 30 students from poor families. Management provides a subsidy for food.

By this time the campus of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal is taking shape but water scarcity is the main hurdle ahead. Thanks to Rotary international and Dr A S Gawande for generous help for Drinking water project. To meet the requirement of Laboratory and Library in 1995 Library building has been constructed out of Dr A S Gawandes fund. To be race with IT boom we have started computer courses. A well equipped and well furnished computer lab is setup from a project sponsored jointly by Rotary Club Nanded and Rotary International. During IX plan period UGC has sanctioned seed amount for Boys Hostel and Girls Hostel Building. We could not complete these unless timely fund is sanctioned by Dr Atmaram Gawande. Well furnished hostel facility is available to both girls and boys who were earlier deprived from education.

Library of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal M.S. India started the construction of a 12,000 square feet library building in 2005. The library building at the college is now completed and named as Croci Library.

Language Lab of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal was established in 2003 provides students with audio tutorials and coaching in English. 10 students can avail themselves of this facility at one time. This facility is unique in the area and was started with the aim of improving students' English language skills. Auditorium of Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal the carpet area is 10,000 sq.ft. Cost of construction is 45 lakhs. Seating arrangements for 1500 students.

The establishment of Sports faculty at Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal was done in the year 1966. The first lecturer who was appointed at that time for Sports Faculty was Prof. Gazulla (B.A, D.P.Ed) . He served this organization for 2 years from 1967 to 1968. The sports which were held at that time were CRICKET, KABADDI, VOLLYBALL, BADMINTON, FOOTBALL, TABLE-TENNIS, and ATHLETICS. Prof. Gazulla was expert of FOOTBALL. From the year 1968 to 1970 Prof. V. S. Jadhao (B.A, D.P.Ed) was appointed as a Sports Teacher. After him Shri. G. P. Jatale (C.P.Ed) was appointed as an Incharge of Sports Faculty from the year 1970 to 1971. From the year 1971 till now Prof. P. S. Batewar (M.A, D.P.Ed) is serving for this Sports Faculty. Gopikabai Sitaram Gawande College – GCG Yavatmal is having a very good infrastructure for Sports. We have a Big Lawn Tennis Court, Big Cricket, Football Ground, Court for Volley Ball, Ground for Hand Ball, and Athletics ground.
