Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern Region of India. The main goal of this institution is to produce globally competitive human resources in farm sector and to carry out research in both conventional and frontier areas for production optimization as well as to disseminate the generated technologies as public good for benefitting the food growers/produces and traders involved in the sector while emphasizing on sustainability, equity and overall food security at household level.
Mission of Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati is to fill up talent gap in agriculture and allied sector to preposition the state to combat the emerging challenges in agriculture and ensure productivity increase in agric-horti-animal-fish crops on the face of shrinking/fragmented land holdings, ailing soil health, diminishing water resources and increased human population.
Vision of Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati is provisioning of quality human resource to facilitate technology led agricultural renaissance revitalizing and rejuvenating post-green revolution in agriculture ensuring both production and environment sustainability targeting a minimum of 4% agricultural growth while addressing the issues of household nutritional security, farmers’ distress, commerce in agriculture as well as regional, national and global food crisis taking the advantage of innovative technology, market reforms and liberalization.
Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati is located in Khanapara Campus, Guwahati, Assam.
During early 20th century, establishment of two research stations, one at Karimganj (1913) and the other at Titabor (1923) paved the way, immediately after independence, towards setting up of the Assam Agricultural College (AAC) at Jorhat and the Assam Veterinary College (AVC) at Nagaon in 1948. Later, on April 1, 1969 the Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati came into being through “The Assam Agricultural University Act, 1968”, renaming AAC as College of Agriculture headquartered at Jorhat and AVC as College of Veterinary Science simultaneously shifting its site from Nagaon to Khanapara.
Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati offered Bachelor Courses & Master Courses. The two libraries of erstwhile Assam Agricultural College, Jorhat and Assam Veterinary College, Khanapara, Guwahati were used as the springboard for shaping up Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati Library when the University was established in April, 1969.Obviously, the history of Assam Agricultural University Library lies embedded in the history of these two libraries only.
Now the network of Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati library has widened considerably with the addition of more collages , research stations etc. and all the libraries under the network provide excellent aminities to the users. Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati Central Library is located at Jorhat which caters to the needs of the students, teachers and scientists of the faculty of Agriculture and Home Science. In addition, the libraries at other college campuses and research stations such as, Biswanath Chariali, Roha and North - Lakhimpur are also growing satisfactorily. Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati Central Library is housed in a building of 2500sq. m. in size. The Library provides the services like lending , reference and displaying of reading materials as well as lending of books from Text Book Bank besides having facilities of Documentation, reprography etc.
Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati has two Directorates of Research, viz., Directorate of Research (Agric) and Directorate of Research (Vety.), with their head quarters at Jorhat and Khanapara respectively. The Directorate of Research (Agri.) coordinates and administers the research activities in agriculture and home science, while Directorate of Research looks after the research works in veterinary and fisheries.
The research strategy of Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati has been to develop economically viable and ecologically sustainable crop production technologies which can be conveniently adopted by the farmers. To carry out location specific and need-based research works, AAU has six Regional Research Stations and three Crops Research Stations in addition to research undertaken at Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati Head Quarter, Jorhat and Biswanath College of Agriculture, Sonitpur. The university has given necessary research support to develop environmentally sound and economically feasible technologies of different field and horticultural crops. Presently, technology generation efforts are focussed mainly to varietal identification/development of major crops suitable to different agro-ecological situations, development of production technologies for field and horticultural crops, aromatic and medicinal plants, soil and water management, cropping and farming system, integrated nutrient management, integrated pest management, integrated crop-fish-livestock farming, post-harvest technology, biotechnology, testing of agricultural tools and equipments, development of agro-forestry, farm forestry, sericulture, bee keeping etc.
The Training & Placement Cell is an essential component of Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati, Jorhat catering to the needs of its students for their career development. The cell organizes training programmes on Personality Development, Communication Skills, Leadership and such other areas. The cell facilitates Campus interviews and placement in various government and non government organizations. Large number of the graduate and post graduate students of Assam Agricultural University-AAU Guwahati have been placed in different organizations involved in Research and Development, Business, Banking areas in agriculture, College of Veterinary Science, College of Fishery Science and College of Home science and all of them have undergraduate and postgraduate programmers. All the students of the constituent colleges are in the preview of this cell.
