In the year 1978, he began his career with a story Wonder Island. The story was published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Prior to that, Akira Toriyama worked in an advertising agency in Nagoya for about 3 years. In the year 1981, Akira Toriyama was awarded with Shogakukan Manga Award for best shonen or shojo.
