University of Adelaide – Waite was established on 6 November 1874 after a £20,000 donation by grazier and copper miner Walter Watson Hughes. It is the third oldest university in Australia. The first Chancellor was Sir Richard Hanson and the first Vice-Chancellor was Dr Augustus Short. The first degree offered was the Bachelor of Arts and the University started teaching in March 1876. In 1881, the University of Adelaide was the first Australian university to admit women to science courses and its first female graduate was Edith Emily Dornwell. University of Adelaide – Waite Campus houses the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, which was established on the site in 1924 following a bequest of Urrbrae House and 300 acres from Mr Peter Waite to the University of Adelaide. The Waite has developed into an integrated research and teaching precinct that has been presented as a model for the collocation of agricultural research institutions and has established a track record for delivering value to industry through innovative research and quality education.


The great hall of the University of Adelaide, Bonython Hall, was built in 1936 following a donation from the owner of The Advertiser newspaper, Sir Langdon Bonython. University of Adelaide – Waite is situated in Adelaide's south-eastern foothills, in the suburb of Urrbrae on 1.74 square kilometres of land. A large amount of the land was donated in 1924 by the pastoralist Peter Waite. This donation was initially used to establish the Waite Agricultural Research Institute which later became the Waite campus. The Waite Precinct in Adelaide is Australia's leading research, education and commercialisation cluster. It has the largest concentration of expertise in the southern hemisphere in the areas of plant biotechnology, cereal breeding, sustainable agriculture, wine and horticulture and land management. University of Adelaide – Waite unique collection of a number of Australia's leading agricultural and environmental research organisations is home to 1000 staff and postgraduate students. The annual research expenditure of the collocated partners is more than $110 million per annum. At University of Adelaide – Waite Campus, the Faculty of Sciences has leading research capabilities in the areas of horticulture, plant and pest science, oenology and viticulture, and soil and land systems. The Faculty of Sciences also has extensive research and training links with the collocated partners, and internationally. University of Adelaide – Waite is the home of The Plant Accelerator, the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine and contains components of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
