National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim was established as an autonomous body under Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. In 2004, the institute has been designated as "A Center under Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM)" by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. Prof Manjula Chaudhary is presently its Director In February 2007, Dr Sutheeshna Babu. S (PhD- JNU) has taken charge of the Institute as Nodal Officer.

National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim has been setup by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India as an apex institute for meeting the challenges of fast evolving leisure-based watersporting in India. Since inception, it has been our constant endeavour to creatively to fulfill the mandates. With the focused strategies and actions, it has already emerged to position itself as nodal body in India in the matters related to development and promotion of watersports as part of the burgeoning tourism business.

National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim performs a variety of functions: impart training in a wide range of leisure-based watersporting, prepare feasibility/development report for watersporting to state government agencies and corporate/ private entrepreneurs, frame safety norms, watersports awareness campaigns, water safety campaigns, inspection and certification of watersports centers and so on. National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim is the first Institute of this nature in the South East Asia and would cover the entire range of watersports disciplines such as life saving, boat handling, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, scuba diving, river rafting and kayaking. Since inception, 20 courses have been developed covering the watersports professionals, managers and the tourists, particularly those visiting Goa.

National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim is envisaged to function as a model for similar initiatives/ entrepreneurs with regard to faculty and staff, training infrastructure, watersports equipment and specialised repair and berthing facilities. Plans are being conceived to expand its activities to encompassing other adventure sporting items so as to transform itself into an Institute of Adventure Sports. National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim offers different kind of courses leading to different streams.

National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim strive to set high standards of the sporting and safety in addition to guiding the Govt. agencies and potential entrepreneurs in matters of watersports business. Presently, trainings are offered in the entire range of watersports disciplines such as powerboat handling, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, river rafting, kayaking etc. The certification in life-saving techniques for watersports operators, beach life-guarding, pool life-guarding and water-park are very unique in content and training pedagogy.

Placement Cell of National Institute of Watersports – NIWS Panjim most courses offered by the Institute are mandatory in nature for watersports operation, Pool Management, Water-theme Park Operation etc. In the absence of trained and proficient operating personal, it is illegal to organize watersporting. The swimming pool and water-theme park owners are bound to appoint the personnel trained in Life Saving Techniques (LST). Being only Institute of this nature in India, there are plenty of job opportunities to the trainees passing out from the Institute. Many trainees also get attractive offers from the Middle East countries after gaining experience.
