The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology that was set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India on January 28, 2004. Graduate level courses were started in 1924. The college was renamed as Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1932 and is now also known as NIT Patna.
The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna earlier known as Bihar College of Engineering, Patna, is the 6th oldest engineering college of the country. It has recently been given Institute of National Importance Status in accordance with the NIT Act.
The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna has taken rapid steps from the time when it was given the status of NIT. With regularization of academic sessions and major steps taken for the improvement of the infrastructure, the college certainly looks set to validate its up gradation and make its own place. New departments have been added in the college and placements have also improved drastically.
The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna has a fully functional extension branch of Allahabad Bank within the college premises which has all the new and modern banking facilities for the students and the employees in the campus.

The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna has a fully equipped computer lab o to sharpen the programming skills of the students and to get practical experience with the use of the software’s in their relevant fields of concern.
The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna also offers residential facilities to students. There are three boy's hostels and one girl's hostel in the campus. Each hostel has a central mess facility and 24 hours uninterrupted water and electricity supply.
The college has Wi-Fi connectivity all over the campus and Internet connectivity to every department and also to the hostels. The College has a central Library which has more than 50,000 books and approximately 1,100 globally acclaimed e-journals and works for about 10 hrs per day. The Central Library has a separate e-resource section on the ground floor, a study section on the first floor and a separate section altogether for computer related books on the second floor.
The National Institute of Technology-NIT Patna has appointed a permanent doctor within the college premises for students and employees for consultations on various health related problems and is available for two hours every working day free of cost.
