The National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore , located in Bangalore, is part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The mandate of NCBS is fundamental research in the frontier areas of biology. Our research interests range from the study of single molecules to ecology and evolution. In addition we engage in a number of collaborative initiatives, such as inStem and the iBio; and we help to develop cutting edge instrumentation and software via C-CAMP.

The National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore is a wing of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Professor S Ramaseshan, the director of IISC, in 1982 suggested the thought of collaboration between TIFR and IISc for beginning a biological center, which would be placed in the IISc campus. The thought did not bear any fruit, but in 1984 the Planning Commission, Government of India decided to furnish funds for a center for biological studies at Bangalore.

It was decided that the center would be an autonomous unit under the guidance of TIFR. The center was supposed to deal with almost all aspects of biology viz cell biology, development of animals and plants, brain research, behavior, ecology and theoretical biology. A MOU was signed with the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in February 1991 at Bangalore and finally a campus was set up in 1992. Today, the National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore has become a premier research institute in the field of biology, which uses computational and experimental approaches.

The ambit of research activities at National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore has diversified appreciably in the past year, with the addition of five new faculty members and three young investigators. With this expansion, research activities in biological spectroscopy, nucleic acid biochemistry, cellular neurobiology, human and population genetics, cellular networks and cell biology have received a major infusion of new ideas. At the same time, the need for additional equipment that will facilitate the work of the new research groups, has become manifest. Moreover, much of the research carried out at National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore is multi-disciplinary in nature, which demands that a wide range of instrumentation be available in a user-friendly way.

We are a premier research institute with all the necessary facilities that a research scientist may need. Research interests of our faculty lie in the frontier areas of biology. The talent and drive of our students and faculty continues to show us the way to good science.Research at National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore (a part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research ) uses experimental and computational approaches to the study of molecules, cells and organisms. We aim to understand biology at each of these levels to advance an integrated view of life processes.

While the mandate of National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore is the study of biology, we realize that success requires research problems to be approached from a variety of directions. We therefore have recruited, and encourage applications from, researchers with a variety of backgrounds in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science.Biological problems not only require multiple approaches for their solution, but also need researchers of varied expertise to collaborate. Collaboration at every level—within National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore , within the country and internationally—is strongly encouraged. Our research groups are small and with specific strengths that make interactions with complementary groups fruitful.

Our facilities and equipment are accessible, well managed, used optimally and allow most kinds of modern research in modern biology to be conducted in- house. Where large- scale facilities are required for specific projects we encourage the use of national and international resources and collaborative arrangements. Well- qualified and trained staff manages our facilities and equipments.

The new instrumentation needed by the new investigators could be procured through regular internal funding from TIFR. TIFR has strongly supported NCBS' commitment to provide sufficient start-up funds to new investigators, so that the time taken to get their laboratories up and running, is minimized. Thus, new investigators get the highest priority for internal National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore funding. But the research activities of older faculty members also demand periodic replenishment of research infrastructure. After new faculty, common research facilities receive the next highest priority for funding. Senior investigators do receive internal funding from National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore , which is based on past performance, but they are expected to continue to equip their laboratories through grants funded by outside agencies. Happily, this has happened to a large extent.

Faculty members have also come together to obtain funding for major equipment. Thus, a multi-photon microscopy and spectroscopy station with fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy and correlation spectroscopy capabilities, as well as atomic force microscopes, which were funded partially by outside funding agencies and partially by NCBS, have been set up in the past two years. The imaging facility at National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore continues to grow, and further initiatives to secure external funding, already taken up by interested faculty members, will lead to substantial augmentation of this facility in the near future.

The National Centre for Biological Sciences - NCBS Bangalore campus is lucky to have open green spaces, many trees, bushes (w-free), flowering plants, migrating butterflies, geckos, bees and bats. We are located in the postgraduate campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences, which has generously leased us 20 acres. Our visitors and us have a pleasant, quiet and green environment to work and relax. We have terrace cafeterias where coffee, snacks and light meals are served and birthdays celebrated. Several handy chalkboards have made these cafeterias centers for discussion. Some of these discussions have recently crystallized into a student-run symposium exploring different areas in biology. A larger (soon to be expanded) canteen serves full meals from breakfast to dinner. The canteen is located near a pond fed by harvested rainwater and clean water from treated sewage. The pond-side is where we gather for dinner after on-campus symposia and public lectures.
