In October of the following year, the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) purchased 22 percent shares of the company, becoming major stackholder. In January 1974, four governments, Sultanate of Oman, Emirates of Abu Dhabi, State of Qatar and Government of Bahrain, signed an agreement under which each got the equal shares of the company.
In 1981, Gulf Air gained the membership of a global trade association International Air Transport Association (IATA). In the Next year, it started services to Riyadh and became the first airline company in the world to do so. The company in 1987 created a maintenance unit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Company (GAMCO). The airline company holds codeshare agreements with various other airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Yemenia, Safi Airways, Philippine Airlines, Korean Air, Garuda Indonesia, American Airlines etc.
It has sponsored various sport events and teams including Queens Park Rangers Football Club, Bahrain Grand Prix and Chelsea Football Club.
