Government Home Science College was established in 1961 in Chandigarh to cater the needs of professional women. Since then it has one of the renowned institutions in the field of home science which impart education to contemporary women to deal with the rapidly changing demands of family life as well as in professional life.
It begun its journey from offering Bsc Home Science and with the passage of time many other courses has been introduced such as Apparel and Textile Design, Dietetics, Human Development and Social Welfare, Interior Design Management along with a B.Sc. Home Science Composite course. The college runs various courses such as B.Sc. Fashion Designing and Postgraduate degree courses in Clothing and Textiles, Foods and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Relations; Postgraduate Diplomas in Fashion Designing, Nutrition and Dietetics and Child Guidance and Family Counselling,Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Child Guidance and Family Counselling. Coming to the infrastructure of the college, it has spread across an area of 15 acres and has possessed a well maintained buildings,playground and beautiful gardens,lawns,lecture theaters and laboratories, computer lab,gymnasium. Hostel facility is also available.
Besides this GHS College also runs Chaitanya which is linked to the department of Human Developments to impart practical training to its students, a laboratory Nursery School with the enrollment of 50 students. The college has also participated in the Adult and Community Education Schemes of P.U (Punjab University) and impart short term training to the Gram Sevikas and Associate Village Women of U.T. Chandigarh alongside undertaking projects offered by many universities. The college also provides placement through its placement cell. It is associated with many reputed firms and offers job opportunities to the job seekers after the course. The placement cell also laid emphasis on personality development and soft skills.
