A graduate programme of Dairy Technology was started in the erstwhile University of Udaipur in the year 1978 in Rajasthan College of Agriculture, which led to the establishment later on in 1982 into a separate College and Faculty of Dairy Science in the University. Since then the College of Dairy and Food Science Technology has undergone various changes in the academic programmes and development of physical facilities. The College has five departments namely, Department of Dairy and Food Technology, Dairy and Food Management and Economics, Department of Dairy & Food Engineering, Chemistry and Microbiology. The product of the college after completing the programme is getting employment in the Dairy & Food Processing industries within and outside state.
On account of the fast development in the processing the packaging industry the requirement of processed foods has increased tremendously for the society for domestic consumption as well as for export. Hence, a need had arisen to diversify the academic activities of the existing College of Dairy and Food Science Technology of Dairy Science by initiating a graduate programme in Food Processing so as to provide competent technical manpower to the fast developing industry. Keeping this in view, the Strategic Development Project of the Rajasthan Agricultural University accepted the suggestions of the college and consequently recommended the widening of the scope of the present Dairy Science College of by converting into College of Dairy & Food Science Technology.
Consequently the Board of Studies designed a graduate programme in Food Technology parallel to the existing programme of Dairy Technology, which was approved by the Academic council for initiation from the session 1999-2000. The University received financial assistance from the World Bank and a part of the grant was earmarked for developing infrastructure and purchase of processing machineries for this College of Dairy and Food Science Technology. With effect from the session 1999-2000, the College was named as College of Dairy & Food Science Technology and two departments of Dairy & Food Engineering and Dairy & Food Technology along with library, Computer and ARIS lab and classrooms were housed in the new building. The facilities for instructional processing plant particularly for food items are yet to be built up at the site. Similarly in a bid to consolidate all the facilities at one place, few more laboratories and faculty rooms are required to be added to this building to shift the department of Dairy & Food Chemistry, Dairy & Food Microbiology and Dairy and Food Management and Economics, college administrative & accounts office & some ancillary facilities for storage.
Besides the above, facilities of some departments of College of Technology & Agriculture Engineering, Rajasthan College of Agriculture and College of Home Science are also available to the students of this college as they receive instructions from teaching staff of these colleges for some courses offered to them. The College of Dairy and Food Science Technology has competent faculty available for the core subjects and few more positions are likely to be created soon with the assistance of the State Government particularly for Food Technology component.
The mission of the Establishment of the College of Dairy and Food Science Technology is need based, Value based education, Research & training in Food & Dairy Technology with a view to generate qualified & competent man power for technological & social needs and the vision is to become on outstanding technical college with integration of science & Technology inputs that produces world class teaching, research & extension in Dairy & food Technology innovation for industry & society.
The College of Dairy and Food Science Technology library is e-library, where issue, deposition and search of books is made through computers. A special data bank of books has been made in our college library, where readers are having facility of accessing books through computer. The College has excellent automated library housing over 8928 volumes of science and technical books. In addition, 12 National and International Journals, CDs, etc provides immense scope for rare information to its readers. The library provides computerized book lending facility.
Internet facilities are also available in the College of Dairy and Food Science Technology Library with all possibilities of referring electronic journals. Most of the books relevant to various disciplines are available. Libraries attached to different colleges of the University are also available for consultation. Some rare books and literature donated by the family of Late Dr. R. S. Rawat, Shri S. K. Bansal, Dr. S. P. Ohri, Shri. B. S. Jerry and Dr. S. S. Saraswat are also available for consultation. The library is now Internet connected with 6 terminals.
The College of Dairy and Food Science Technology has its own hostel of fourteen double seated rooms to accommodate 24 students. The remaining students are residing in rented rooms close to new campus. Students desirous of hostel accommodation may apply to the chief Warden, College of Dairy & Food Science Technology. The rooms are allotted depending upon their availability and as per norms.
The College of Dairy and Food Science Technology at present has its own playgrounds of volleyball and cricket and efforts are being made to provide facilities for a variety of games and sports through University Gymnasium, which is in close vicinity of the college. Students are expected to take active part in games and sports activities. The University Sports Board coordinates and oversees the games and sports activities of the various colleges of the university.
College of Dairy and Food Science Technology offers Bachelor of Technology in Dairy Technology and Bachelor of Technology in Food Technology course.
As a general requirement for the degree for which weight age of one credit hour has been assigned, the students are expected to take active part in at least one of the three activities, viz, National Cadet Corps National Service Scheme and National Sports Organization. Hence the students admitted in I year I Semester of B. Tech. (DT & FT) programme are required to opt any one of the three activity i.e. NCC/NSS/NSO within 15 days from the date of registration. Options once given shall not be changed for the purpose of their assessment at any subsequent stage. Students are advised to attend these activities regularly in 4 semesters.
A good placement cell has been set up within the campus to provide the training and job opportunity to the students.
